License Requirements
  • Be of good moral character
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Meet education requirements (refer to NYSED website for specific details):
    • Option 1: BA or BS in geological sciences, including coursework in mathematics and supporting sciences, and coursework in earth materials, sedimentary geology, geotechnology, surficial and near-surface geology, hydrogeology, geodynamics and geophysics, economic geology, and/or geological skills/applications; OR 
    • Option 2: Bachelor's degree in a related science or engineering field and a master's or doctorate degree in geological sciences that fulfills the above-referenced coursework requirements; OR 
    • Option 3: Qualify with 12 years of acceptable experience. 
  • Meet experience requirements (refer to NYSED website for specific details):
    • Encompass a broad range of geological disciplines; 
    • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of geological principles and concepts and the ability to apply them to the practical solution of geological problems or issues;
    • Demonstrate progressive professional practice beyond data collection, routine sampling, laboratory work, or geological drafting, that requires independent judgment, competency, and accountability such that you are qualified to assume responsible charge of geological work;
    • Include the appropriate number of years of experience based on the credit earned for education.
  • Pass the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and Principles of Geology (PG) exams (refer to the NYSED website for specific details).  The ASBOG examination administrations are held in October and March each year. Registration for the March examination administration opens in early October.



If the applicant is licensed in another state and meets all of the requirements (including passing the ASBOG examination) for licensure in New York State, the applicant may apply for licensure through endorsement (refer to the NYSED website for specific details).


The deadline for applications under the Grandparent Provision has passed. All applications made under the Grandparent Provision must have been postmarked by the expiration date of November 20, 2017.
