The New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) was pleased to have hosted the first annual Geology Days conference from October 17-19, 2022 in Saratoga, New York. Well over 200 people attended the event. It was nice to see many old friends and to be able to meet some new ones as well. Even though there was a heavy rain on Monday evening, people enjoyed the haunted trolley ghost tour event.

The event was established to allow professional geologists, engineers, and sponsors to interact and network, while providing continuing education credit to New York State Design Professionals.

If attendees participated in all of the sessions, including the Key note presentation by Daniel Lang of the NYS Department of Health, they earned 14.5 professional development hours (PDH). New York State will require professional geologists to have received PDH credits upon renewals stating January 1, 2023. More information about the about of credits you will need for your next renewal period can be found at our website https://www.nyscpg.com/Continuing-Education. After January 1, 2025, you will need 36 hours of PDHs per three-year renewal period including 1 PDH of ethics training. Future Geology Days conferences will strive to provide at least one ethics course to satisfy the requirement. NYSCPG is already planning the second annual event! We are looking at a couple of other venues due to projected attendance for next year. Look for an announcement in the coming weeks for the date and venue.

    Welcome back John!

The NYSCPG Board of Directors is very pleased to announce the return of former president John Nadeau as our Executive Director! We established the role of the Executive Director earlier this year and John will be working hard to deliver more value to our members and will be focusing his efforts on completing old and new initiatives.

Please join us in welcoming John and wishing him great success in his new role!

John provided the message below to share with you all:

    Dear NYSCPG Members and Friends,

It is my honor to accept the newly established role of Executive Director for the NYSCPG. I appreciate the trust that the current Board of Directors has shown in me for such an important role. Over my years participating in the leadership of this organization, I have had the pleasure of traveling the state to attend many events and meeting with many of you throughout the years that I have participated in NYSCPG’s leadership team. I am looking forward to returning to serve our profession and this organization. I have been working over the last couple of years as the Executive Director for another organization and intend to use what I have learned from this experience to help NYSCPG. I will be assisting the Board of Directors in providing additional value to you as members of this organization.

The beginning of 2022 established the start of the continuing education requirement for the Professional Geologist license in New York and we will soon be announcing some new avenues for you to gain educational credits. I will also be assisting the Board of Director in communicating with the State Education Department and will provide updates in future news updates.

The establishment of the Executive Director position will take a bit of time, but hopefully not on a geologic scale. Please bear with us as we move to provide real value to the membership. Please reach out to me with any questions or suggestions that you may have regarding the future of the organization. I can be reached at jnadeau@nyscpg.com.

I look forward to working with the Board to make this a successful venture and hope to see many of you in the near future.

     - John

On December 22, 2021, Governor Hochul signed AB 4328 into law. The law provides for the designation of geologically significant areas, territories and sites throughout the state, and for the establishment of a state geological trail. The bill contains a list of potential geoparks and sites. See if your favorite made the list!

November 5, 2021: NYSCPG’s Past President Gene Florentino attended the Earth and Atmospheric Science Majors' Night at SUNY Oneonta where students and alumni exchanged questions and answers about career opportunities in a speed dating format. A big thank you to SUNY Oneonta's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for inviting the NYSCPG to the event!

Looking ahead to the upcoming holiday season, the NYSCPG Board of Directors plans to commission another special edition beer batch from Lithology Brewing Company of Farmingdale, NY as a fundraising effort after the success of our Thin Section Pale Ale fundraiser from 2020.

The special beer batch for 2021 will be a pilsner dubbed “Pleistocene Pilsner – Best Served Cold.”

We are soliciting designs from our membership for the central image on the label. Lithology will ultimately finalize the label using the selected design. Please email us your designs by September 30, 2021 at nyscouncilpg@gmail.com.

Please send us image files (JPEGs, PNGs, etc.) or PDFs.  If responses and designs are plentiful, we will put the submitted designs up to our membership for a vote!

On the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, we would like to remember Barry Schwartz and keep him in our thoughts and prayers. Barry is one of our fallen NYSCPG BOD members who was a first responder on 9/11. Barry passed away on August 18, 2020 from complications related to his selfless duties on 9/11 in helping in all those in need on that day.
